Interviews

Axel

The Bartender of the boat:

Actually I don’t know anything about boats, this is my first boat experience. You know I’m farrowees but I was raised in Ålborg. I got the job because of my mother tongue.

« Last spring, all the Faroe islanders came together during one weekend to realize some maintenance projects. We renovated walking paths, constructed viewpoints, erected direction signs… During this weekend, the islands were closed to the tourists but we welcomed volunteers from all over the world to help us. Our natural environment is fragile and it was a way to protect it and to sensitize the visitors. This operation was really liked and everybody expects that we will do it again. »

« We have to put hiking fee for this area. During three years we didn’t eared any bird. We use this money to build a new hiking path in order to preserve from visitors some other spaces and, that way, allow the ecosystem to regenerate. »

The women at the reception of the boat:

"For me living on the sea is connected to work, back at home I just can go wherever I want and here I’m just in the same place. Onboard it’s mostly like a family, we are all close together and there is no time off. We are living all in the same place and it’s more a social life onboard compared to home."

"For me personally I don’t look out on the sea much, but for passenger it’s interesting. Normally it has just been sea and there is nothing to see. But mostly when we pass an oil rig they come here and ask “what’s this? and what does it do?”. Some of them are abandoned oil rigs and then they ask “why don’t they remove it?” People are aware of things and also curious about the things they see. For me I believe, it’s good for them to see actually because otherwise it would be just empty space."

Juha

Housekeeper at Smyriline boat:

How did you end up working in a boat? " I heard they were looking for people and I had some previous experience working as a nanny and being away from my family"

"I don't know how to swim, I'm actually really scared of the water. Even when I take a shower I prefer not to put my head under the water"

Does it feel safe to be in a cruiseship on the ocean? ” Yeah, I'm sure they know what they do"
